I think i'm starting to like the sound of the M4/3 cars. They are not as high pitch as the other I6's. It's more of a guttural sound and think it's a nice change of pace. I saw the new M4/3's at Hunt valley C&C and the new M4 was absolutely GORGEOUS (said with australian accent). I may be one of the best looking Bmw's ever.

I hate it sounds super rice.

I don't know it sounds kind of like a blender. . . not a particularly sexy sound. Now the TVR straight six, that sounds like a guttural brutal death metal singer.

I wish I liked how it sounds as it would be cool to one day have an M3 that can last more than 4 days before I need to fill the tank up again. But I really, really, really don't like how the new M3/M4 sound. It's a mix of quietness at some times, farting sounds other times, and low-pitch engine noises during acceleration. The howl of the N/A cars at WOT just can't be beat.

Why did you find a video with a F355 in it. The Tvr sounded great but the Ferrari was better.

I don't know, I think the V8 Ferraris sound like MR2s. Now the Sagaris sounds like God.

Hate it is an understatement. There are cars that are considered "rice" that I like a lot more.

No part of the M4's sound appeals to me. It's eerily quiet when the driver isn't accelerating and doesn't sound good during hard acceleration either.

Straight sixes are tricky sounding engines in the first place. Even the N/A ones can be too tame. Certain cars like the E46 M3 CSL and the race car version of the M1 sound amazing. The new turbo charged I6 doesn't sound like much at all to me.

This is just my opinion but I no longer see the point in the M3/M4. If I had to have a newer generation 3 series I would just go with the 335i/435i. Sure the M cars are faster but are they really worth the extra money if you don't track the car? When I bought my E90 M3 two years ago I cross shopped a one year old M3 and a new 335i. That decision was a no brainer for me as the M3 was cheaper and a lot more exciting. If I was buying today and really wanted a turbo charged car that got better gas mileage than what I have now I would go with a CPO F30 335i M Sport. It would be way cheaper and probably be at least 80% as fun as the M3 on public roads. I know it wouldn't be as prestigious but who cares. You don't really buy an M3 to impress people anyways as non gearheads don't even know what it is.

It's waaaaaay too close to a fartcan civic. I don't think it's fair to expect it to live up to the s62, and I'm sure it's a minor problem a catback can fix, but the stock car does not do it for me at all.

I am not hopeful that a catback can fix the sound. I feel like BMW would have made it sound good if they could have. they would have at least offered a sport exhaust at an extra cost.

Hopefully I'm wrong. It would be nice if it's possible to make the M4 sound good and keep it CA smog legal.

Haha that's not even fair. The TVR is the I6 sound God.

My favorite N/A I6s that I know of (so far):

TVR (which you told me about)

BMW M1 race car (which I think you told me about as well)

BMW E46 M3 CSL

I'm not saying it's the best sounding Bmw, no that title belongs to the E46 M3/Csl. I'm just saying it's sounds good but not great. I also agree with you i don't think i would buy the new M4/3 either when i'm older because i will most likely have better since then i do now. Although 19 so the M badge means everything to me at this point in my life.

There might be other reasons why they couldn't make it sound great. I don't know anything about flow dynamics, but I feel like this gigantic resonator chamber is totally not helping things in the sound department. I want to give it the benefit of the doubt and see what the aftermarket can offer.

Oh man we both love the CSL. I have an E46 M3 and E90 M3 and I always wish the E46 was a CSL. Anytime I floor it I roll the windows down and pretend it's a CSL, lol.

Ah I feel ya when I was 19 the M badge was so important to me. I wanted an M3 so bad but couldn't afford it. When I was 21 I bought a used 325is and did some mods to try to make it perform like an M3. It wasn't until after I was 30 that I got my first M3.

You should just get a used E92 M3 once you have the money! Get one with a carbon fiber roof and 6MT. The prices have dropped so much that I think they will bottom out pretty soon. Then values will flatline for a while then possibly go up. I really think the E92 with the CF roof and stick will be a future classic.

Seriously, TVR was one of those companies that made some of my favorite cars and they all sounded pretty swell.

The older BMWs sound great but I their inline 6s are a bit raspy for my tastes. Sounds great but I them a bit like this I guess. . .

The older N/A BMW I6s were a bit raspy. At least the smaller ones were. The 3.5L ones sound pretty good.

Sometimes I wish I owned the last 5 Series with the 3.5L I6 and manual gearbox just for the historic value. I know that the V8s that replaced it were quicker. But that long I6 that was too big to fit in the 3 Series was pretty awesome.

I don't know if you have seen this, but it is a 3L BMW inline 6. My god, what a fantastic sound! I would love one of these in my car.

Except for the solid mounted rear subframe, carbon fiber front bracing system (all leading to twice the torsional rigidity of the e92), extremely high-rated suspension and supremely over-engineered steering system, there's no reason to buy a M3/M4 over other cars in their series.

Oh, wait.

I'm not saying it's not the better car. It is for SURE the better car. You might have missed this part:

"Sure the M cars are faster but are they really worth the extra money if you don't track the car?"

I should have included AutoX as well. The M3/M4 is definitely worth it if you are going to do any sort of competition. My only point was that is it still worth it for commuting? Would a 335i feel at least 80% as good when driving around town and doing some canyon carving?

One thing I should have done but forgot to do is compare the price delta between the two cars. If it's not really that big then my point is invalid as buyers may as well get the real deal... I had just assumed that the M3 was more than a trivial amount more expensive than the 335i
